Woodhall Spa 1940's Festival

Woodhall Spa will ‘turn back the clock’ to the days of the Second World War over the weekend of 21st and 22nd July 2012 when the village holds its first ever 1940s Festival.
The event is being organized by a team of enthusiastic volunteers chaired by local resident Simon Elmer.
Simon told us ‘ Woodhall Spa has a rich wartime heritage, including the presence here of the famous RAF 617 Dambusters Squadron, the 1st Airlanding Brigade which fought at Arnhem, and Polish soldiers who battled at Monte Cassino. I have even spoken to veterans, now in their 90s, who immediately ask me whether the Kinema is still here! We hope to capture the spirit of the times with a series of events and attractions which will continue to add to Woodhall Spa’s reputation as a great place to visit’.
Events currently being planned for the weekend include:
- A 1940s themed evening, with entertainment and singing by Lola L’amour
- Flypasts by aircraft of the Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight
- Wartime memorabilia traders and charity fundraising stalls
- Children’s 1940s street party
- Senior Citizens Tea Dance
- Classic, restored and ex-military vehicles
- Wartime era re-enactors and Living History Groups
- Outdoor sing-along with Lola L’amour
- Period film screenings at the Kinema In The Woods
Simon added ‘ We are always keen to hear from anyone with an interest in this period who wants to get involved in any of our events. By having our event in the same year as the Queens Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics, we hope to make this Summer truly memorable for Woodhall Spa’.
Any enquiries can be addressed to Simon on mselmer@supanet.com

Vitality

A new group is setting up in Woodhall Spa for the over 60’s, delivering exercise with physio based movement called Vitality. The group will meet Thursdays from 1.30pm – 2.30pm at the Roman Catholic Church Hall in Woodhall Spa.
Vitality is a not for profit Lincolnshire project delivering fun, safe and effective specially designed exercise classes which are set to music from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. We take these classes all across the County in a range of venues – currently about 60 classes a week and East Lindsey District Council have asked us to set up a new group in Woodhall Spa which we are delighted to do. The classes are usually really popular, offering 45 minutes of exercise followed by tea and coffee each week. We want to help the over 60’s look after what they’ve got, so we work on improving joints and muscle stiffness, posture, circulation and breathing. We’ll be working out gently to disco, rock ‘n’ roll, salsa and Country music and our aim is to ‘revitalise’ those that come along and join in!
The cost of the classes are subsidised by NHS Lincolnshire, and the first session on the 13th October will be free – so people can come along and see what we do.
The classes run 48 weeks of the year, so this will be a permanent new group in Woodhall Spa, running Thursdays 1.30-2.30pm at the Roman Catholic Church Hall. First session on the 13th October 2011 will be free.
Please don’t hesitate to contact Louise Thompson should you require any further information.

Assistance Required – V-Force in Lincolnshire

Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire (AHL) is seeking assistance to help establish contact with former V-Force personnel who served in Lincolnshire in the early 1960s and then again in the early 1980s.
The recording of oral histories is a significant part of AHL’s remit for their aviation heritage programme, which is funded by an award of £436,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). Several interviews from the World War II era have already been recorded as part of the “Shouting The Odds” project, with some being available via links from their website www.aviationheritagelincolnshire.com
The AHL team is now moving their attention to the post World War II era of the Cold War and the Valiant, Victor and Vulcan crews of the V-Bomber squadrons of the V-Force.
2012 will be the 60th Anniversary of the formation of the RAF’s V-Force and in October next year it will be 50 years after the Cuban Missile Crisis. 2012 will also mark 30 years since the Falklands Campaign, where a massive force of Victor tankers supported the Vulcan bombers from Lincolnshire with their Black Buck missions.
AHL officers are currently planning to run some Cuban Missile Crisis themed events in Oct 2012 and are trying to identify V-Force (Thor and Bloodhound) personnel who were serving in Lincolnshire at the time, who would be willing to assist with these activities. AHL officers are also trying to identify V-Force, Thor and Bloodhound personnel from this time to see if they are willing to record their 'Cold War' oral histories.
Lincolnshire ’s bases that were involved in these operations include:
RAF Coningsby
RAF Scampton
RAF Waddington
RAF Hemswell
RAF Coleby Grange
RAF Bardney |
RAF Caistor
RAF Ludford Magna
RAF Dunholme Lodge
RAF North Coates
RAF Woodhall Spa
RAF Barkston Heath. |
In addition they are also hoping to capture V-Force Falklands Campaign oral histories, mainly connected with operations from RAF Waddington in 1982.
Anyone willing to assist the AHL officers in these matters is requested to make contact with:
Phil Bonner: Phil@aviationheritagelincolnshire.com (for the Cuban Missile Crisis themed events)
David Harrigan: David@aviationheritagelincolnshire.com (for the Cold War & V-Force Falklands Campaign oral histories)

National Non-emergency number

A new national non-emergency number 101 is being rolled out across the country as part of a Home Office initiative. The number is now live in Lincolnshire.
101 will work in the same way as 0300 but for more information on the new number please visit www.police.uk/101 <http://www.police.uk/101>
101 is the number to call when you want to contact your local police - when it’s less urgent than a 999 call. 101 is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
You should call 101 to report less urgent crime and disorder or to speak to your local officers.
For example, you should call 101 if:
- your car has been stolen
- your property has been damaged
- you suspect drug use or dealing in your neighbourhood
Or to:
- report a minor traffic collision
- give the police information about crime in your area
- speak to the police about a general enquiry
101 is being introduced as part of the government's wider work to improve access to the police, ease pressure on 999, and help to efficiently and effectively tackle crime and disorder.
You should continue to call 999 when it is an emergency, such as when a crime is in progress, when there is danger to life or when violence is being used or threatened.
Calls to 101 (from both landlines and mobile networks) cost 15 pence per call, no matter what time of day you call, or how long you are on the phone.
Everyone calling the police for non-emergency matters will now know exactly how much a call will cost them, and can be assured of equal access whether they are on a pay-as-you-go mobile or a home landline.
Calls to 101 are answered by police call handlers in the control room of the local police force. This ensures that staff with local knowledge can answer and deal with the calls and respond appropriately.
You will not be put through to a large national call centre.
When you call 101, the system will determine your location and connect you to the police force covering that area. You will hear a recorded message announcing the police force you are being connected to. If you are on a boundary between two or more forces, the recorded message will give you a choice of which force to be connected to.
Thank you for your continued support.
